Should You Test for Radon?

Whether you’re purchasing a charming fixer-upper or building the home of your dreams, you’re going to have to deal with radon gas. According to the EPA, everyone should be testing for radon. Radon gas comes from the soil and can quickly seep into your home or business. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. This is a gas that you cannot see, smell or taste but is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States!

Any home can have a radon problem. Radon has been found in homes all over the United States. On average, one out of every fifteen U.S. homes has a problem. The only way to know whether your home has a radon problem is to ask professionals to test for it.

How does radon get into your home?

The air pressure inside homes is slightly lower than in the ground (typically 0.7-1.4 psi vacuum), which draws in radon gas from several feet away. Various combustion appliances, such as furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, and exhaust fans and vents, reduce the indoor air pressure. The warm air inside our homes naturally rises reducing the air pressure on lower floors. When the ground is frozen or soaked by rain, radon gas in the ground moves up into the house.
